How many eyes are on your hosta plants?
Many folks refer to petitoles (those things that emerge in the spring) as individual eyes. This is definition is incorrect. Let me explain. From each eye 1 to approximately 5 petitoles will sprout from around its base. Most hostas that I sell have 1-2 eyes. Those hostas that I field divide myself have a more mature crown and thus will have more petitoles sprouting from around the eyes.
