Grasses
 | Acorus gramineus 'Ogon' (Sweet Flag) Small grass-like or even iris-like
foliage with gold to cream variegation. Zone 4a. Height inches. |
 | Andropogon gerardii (Big Blue Stem, Beard Grass, Turkey Foot) Big
Bluestem is Illinois' newest state symbol (adopted 8/31/89) for the official prairie
grass. It was the most abundant and tallest grass in the prairies that once covered most
of Illinois. Its flowering stalk grows in three finger-like branches giving it the
nickname of "turkey foot". It normally grows to heights of around 8 feet. The
pioneers said it was as tall as a man on horseback. Deep roots help the big bluestem
survive in times of drought. It's roots saturate the top 2 feet of the soil with some
reaching to a depth of 12 feet. Zone 4. Height 96 inches. |
 | Andropogon scoparius (Little Bluestem, p.k.a. Schizachyrium scoparium)
A native, clumping, prairie grass. The bottom shoots are bluish colored, thus the common
name, Little Bluestem. Most of the height of the plant is made up by the flowers, which
appear in late summer. The ripening seed heads have a fluffy, feathery appearance and look
beautiful with a bronze to copper fall color. Little Bluestem is effective in masses or
naturalized. Zone 4. Height 39 inches. |
 | Andropogon scoparius "The Blues" (Little Bluestem, p.k.a.
Schizachyrium scoparium) A cultivar of Andropogon scoparius with more blue than the
species. Zone 4. Height 39 inches. |
 | Arrhenatherum bulbosum 'Variegatum' (Tuber Oat Grass, Onion Couch,
Bulbous Oat Grass) Heavily variegated fine grassy foliage. Each leaf has margins of bright
white and rich blue-green striping that run verticle through the center of the blade. It
is grown primarily as a groundcover and a bedding plant in the foreground of perennial
borders. The foliage feels soft to the touch. Where the grass meets the roots, onion like
tubers appear, hence the common name Onion Couch. Zone 4a. Height 15 inches. |
 | Calamagrostis acutiflora (x) 'Overdam' (Variegated Feather Reed Grass)
Very attractive, white-variegated foliage forms an arching clump; clusters of wand-like
flower spikes 36" tall, emerging pink-tinged in June, then drying to golden through
the rest of the growing season. An excellent, cool season grass which is very effective
when planted in groups. Zone 4. Height 46 inches. |
 | Calamagrostis acutifolia (x) 'Karl Foerster' (Karl Foerster's Feather
Reed Grass, Feather Reed Grass) A columnar, cool season, medium-sized, early-blooming
ornamental grass, known for its late spring green-pink-purple inflorescence, winter
effect, and vertical architectural lines. This maybe a common grass, but if you don't have
it, you gotta get it! It is one of the first grasses to come out of winter dormancy. The
plumes appear in June and are enjoyed through the winter. The distinctive vertical lines
it gives to the garden is a real asset. It is very winter hardy to zone 4a which makes
this plant a winner for most residents of the USA. This grass looks great in several
clumps, and makes a great accent or background plant. This plant was selected in Germany
by the late famous horticulturalist Karl Foerster. The grass is suspected to be a hybrid.
Most authorities are unsure of its hybrid cross and perhap will remain unknown as the
selector died in 1971. Zone 4a. Height 65 inches. |
 | Calamagrostis brachytricha (Korean Feather Reed Grass, Achy Breaky
Heart Grass, Fall Blooming Reed Grass) This medium green clumping grass is a rather tidy
plant. In late August/September, 150+ 4' tall refined looking pink plumes top the clump.
The pink color gives way to a bronze tone that remains through the fall. Visitors who see
this in flower can't leave without one. This calamagrostis tolerates hot summers much
better than C. acutiflora. Feather reed grass is an awesome accent plant, or great for
dried arrangements
one of the best and least known! Zone 4a. Height 54 inches. |
 | Carex elata 'Aurea' (Bowles' Golden Sedge, p.k.a. Carex elata 'Bowles
Golden') A beautiful golden shade grass with graceful bending leaves. The great gold color
really brightens up darker locations. A great performer and a must to have in your
collection. Zone 5. Height 24 inches. |
 | Chasmanthium latifolium (Northern Sea Oats, p.k.a. Uniola latifolia)
Grows in loose, upright clumps. The deciduous foliage is light green in sun, but will be
deep green in shade. In the fall, the leaves change to a copper color. The showy
inflorescence is a drooping, flat spike of seed heads appearing in late July. Like the
foliage, they mature to a copper color. The bamboo-like appearance creates a very
interesting, somewhat tropical effect. This grass can be started easily from seeds. Zone
5. Height 36 inches. |
 | Deschampsia cespitosa 'Schottland' (Tufted Hair Grass) Tufted hair
grass is a densely-tufted, upright-open, mound-forming, semi-evergreen perennial. It is
grown for its large, colorful, graceful, early-blooming flowers that appear May through
August. The colorful inflorescence are used in flower arrangements. Tufted hair grass is
an excellent specimen plant in a conventional or water garden. It is best used in group
planting in the middle of a border and prefers a location in full sun or light shade with
moist, slightly acid, or neutral soils. 'Schottland' foliage is darker green than
''Tardiflora'. A cool season grass. Foliage of 'Schottland' is darker green than
'Tardiflora'. Vivid, yellow to gold flower spikes rise 2-3' above the dark green foliage
and are larger than other cultivars. Zone 4a. Height 43 inches. |
 | Festuca ovina 'Elijah Blue' (Blue Fescue, Sheep's Fescue) Low tufted
grass with many stems and fine silver-glaucous leaves. They are very drought hardy and are
great in clumps in borders and rock gardens. A very common but great looking grass. Zone
4a. Height 15 inches. |
 | Glyceria maxima 'Variegata' (Striped Manna Grass, Reed Manna Grass)
Foliage is geen with orange-yellow stripes. Flowers are creamy that float above foliage in
July. This grass has a rhizomatous habit which fills in its area well. You will probably
have to continually dig up its perimeter roots to keep it confined to the area designed
for it. Holds it's color well in drought, but can tolerate a truly aquatic situation. Zone
5. Height 24 inches. |
 | Helictotrichon sempervirens (Blue Oat Grass, Blue Avena Grass) Clump
forming, wiry, vivid blue-grey leaves radiates out from the center to form a bristling
round dome of foliage to 2 feet tall (like a form of a large pincushion). Moderately
drought tolerant. Use a stiff rake annually to remove old foliage. Interesting companion
plantings are Russian Sage and Sedum 'Ruby Glow' or 'Autumn Joy'. The panicles are white
to beige and are borne on tall stems. Plants growing in excessive shade make weak growth
and have an open habit. Zone 4a. Height 36 inches. |
 | Helictotrichon sempervirens 'Sapphire' (Blue Oat Grass, Blue Avena
Grass) A newer cultival with bluer show than species. Zone 4a. Height 36 inches. |

great background, specimen, screen, or conversation plant! Zone 4a. Height 120 inches. |
 | Miscanthus sinensis 'Arabesque' (Arabesque Japanese Silver Grass) A
clump forming, warm weather grass. Dark green, medium textured foliage. 'Arabesque' has a
ridged open habit making a mature clump spread to 8 feet wide! Because of the open habit,
the plumes appear hemispherical compared to 'Graziella' which holds it's plumes in a tight
bunch. Prefers moist, rich soil in full sun. Zone 5. Height 88 inches. |
 | Miscanthus sinensis 'Autumn Light' () Produces a zig-zag plume segment!

Zone 4. Height 96 inches. |
 | Miscanthus sinensis 'Cabaret' (Cabaret Maiden Grass) A very exciting
new cultivar that grows to 6 feet tall with bold variegated bands down the center of the
leaf blade. An alternative to this varigation is Miscanthus sin. 'Variegatus' which has
the variegated bands down the sides of the leaf blades. This plant will make a dramatic
statement in any garden. Zone 5. Height 84 inches. |
 | Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus' (Maiden Grass) A large grass to 6 ft.

season grass with fine, slender, 1/4" wide foliage and upright, arching form. Large,
bronze to white plumes appear in mid to late August (early for a Miscanthus). Prefers
moist, rich, well drained soil in full sun. This plant is one of the best for northern
climates because of its early pluming characteristic. Zone 5. Height 78 inches. |

 | Miscanthus sinensis 'Purpurascens' (Flame Grass) A clump grass needing
full sun and moist, well drained soil. Medium textured, green foliage begins to change
color in September. By late fall it is a orange-red. Flame grass really stands out in the
fall garden. Silvery flowers appear in late August and are a knockout with the fall color.
Nice grass for grouping or accent in perennial beds. Zone 4a. Height 60 inches. |
 | Miscanthus sinensis 'Sarabande' (Sarabande Japanese Silver Grass) A
selection that has been determined by German growers to be the best Miscanthus sinensis
yet. Dark green, arching foliage is very fine textured. Leaf is about 3/16" wide.
Bronze flowers appear late September. Similar texture to 'Gracillimus' but more reliable
bloomer. The inflorescense is held inside the foliage with very few extending about the
